The New Assembly Hall building is a large specialist gathering space with seating for over 1350 people over two levels with a large main stage area, control rooms and stage lighting facilities. The structure of the hall consists of steel portal frames to the main hall area with lightweight steel and engineered timber construction forming the mezzanine floor levels which wrap around the main stage. A carefully detailed seismic separation gap was provided to the adjacent Main Block building at each floor level.
The foundations of the New Assembly Hall were specifically designed for the ground conditions at site to resist the lateral spread towards the river and the overall structure was of lightweight construction to reduce loads onto the soils and minimize costs.
